Wikistalker
In this visualization, a ‘sun’ in generated for each article. Each ray represents an out-going link. The length of each link shows the semantic relevance between those two linked articles based on ‘Wikipedia Miner‘ measures.
In the middle, in the category view tab, Wikistalker illustrates how links are related to the main entry based on how many categories they have in common. The category view mesh shows which links are ontologically related versus rays that show semantic relevance.

Notabilia a visualization of deletion conversations from Wikipedia. From the project’s website: Any [Wikipedia] editor can nominate an article for deletion and, if this nomination is legitimate, a community discussion takes place where any fellow…editors have the opportunity to make their voices heard. Prompted by an email from a colleague studying these deletion discussions, Stefaner began with a data set and found his way to a graphic representation that takes the form of a tree. The Food Deserts Locator.

Part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative, the proposed Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) will expand the availability of nutritious food to food deserts—low-income communities without ready access to healthy and affordable food—by developing and equipping grocery stores, small retailers, corner stores, and farmers markets with fresh and healthy food. The HFFI is a partnership between the Treasury Department, Health and Human Services, and the Agriculture Department (USDA). An Interagency Working Group from the three departments, along with staff from the Economic Research Service (ERS/USDA), developed a definition of food deserts to be used in determining eligibility for HFFI funds.

This thing is amazing! I think it’s amazing step for the Let’s Move Campaign and for the health of people everywhere. If you’ve ever driven through the US, it is ultimately the most frustrating thing that the only thing you can find to eat is potatoes and hamburgers.
Access to healthy food is so crucial and so spatial. A lot of supermarket chains avoid these lower-income, ethnic neighborhoods because they are perceived as “higher risk”. What you get instead are swaths of neighborhoods that have unlimited access to fast food and liquor shops, because that’s their proper “target market”.
Let’s make it better!

Spanish Elections Map

A really good map of election results in Spain since 1987. The developers explain: “We were contacted by the Spanish national television station RTVE to create a visualization tool allowing users to understand the 2011 Spanish electoral results in the context of historical electoral results and a range of demographic indicators.” Impressive.

Atlas of the habitual (descubierto via @sarok) es un proyecto de Tim Clark en el que hace un “gpseado” (me encanta esa palabra) de sus experiencias cotidianas durante 200 días. Cada recorrido fue etiquetado entre 60 categorías como “when I was listening to a song from Arcade Fire”, “Walking the dog”, “Laundry”,.. etc que van conformando diferentes mapas de la zona por la que se movió.
Este es el proceso seguido descrito en su página:

Data collection began on August 24, 2010, the day before I started a new job. This position called for me to uproot and move to a location I had never been to before, Bennington, Vermont, USA. I knew nothing about the town or anyone in it.
Data collection ended on March 13, 2011. This date was picked because it marked the 200th day of gathering this information. Also around that time, I finally felt that I had established a life here.
Data collection process: Each time I stepped outside, I activated the GPS feature on my mobile phone. I would then proceed to my desired end location keeping in mind my experience from point A to B. I would then save the track and tag it with keywords.
For example, a track named Ben220KateAFRain would stand for being in Bennington on February 20, with or going to see Kate, listening to the Arcade Fire album “The Suburbs,” while it was raining. This process was repeated everywhere I went for the 200 days. I would then import all the tracks into the computer, and put the tracks in corresponding folders named for each tag. The folders would then be exported into Processing where custom software visualized that track with a backdrop of all tracks. Images and prints were then made out of this program.

Intelligent Cities

The statistic is everywhere — now, for the first time, more than half of the world’s population is living in cities. At the same time, technological advancements in information gathering provide ever-expanding opportunities to examine and assess the way we live. Making sense of this bounty of information, however, and learning how to find meaning from the data are daunting challenges.
The Intelligent Cities Initiative, a project of the National Building Museum, is an effort to investigate the intersection of information technology and urban life and design. In partnership with TIME and IBM, and with funding by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Museum has launched a multi-pronged effort to understand how we live in cities today, the choices we’ve made in the past, where we want to be in the future and how we can make better-informed decisions to reach those goals. And they want input from as many people as possible — that means you — to help them do so.
