APAP 2010 Open Pavilion - Public Living Room
“The lower seating portion and the upper roof portion of the pavilion are integrated into a single structural system, which takes the form of an oversized chain net. Created through the repetition of steel tube arcs of various shapes and sizes, the flattened sphere-like structure is firm and stable. The seating area in the lower half may be conceived of as a reconfiguration of bent steel tube chairs in collective form, whose interlocking acts as links in a chain. Between these links, hammocks are installed to accommodate seating. The upper half of the structure is designed to support a suspended translucent membrane roof to keep out the sun and rain.

In plan, 18 sets of steel pipes are braided in concentric formation to form a chain link, while the cross section shows five levels stacked on top of each other to create a flattened sphere. Every part of the structure is in the form of an arc produced by bending steel pipes (60—140 mm in diameter) using high frequency induction heating and welding them together on-site. There are 421 arcs, ranging from 35 cm to 3 m in radius. Their total length reaches 592 m. The height of the structure is 4.5 m; the maximum diameter is 11.5 m; and the diameter of the floor surface is 7 m.

Visitors enter through a distorted portion of link, which has been stretched and held up to form an entranceway.

On the outsides of the steel pipes, steel rings are welded 20 cm apart where the hammocks can be attached and detached easily when replacement becomes necessary.
All 70 hammocks were created using a traditional knotting method. They come in 10 different shapes with some variations. A total of 8 km of rope was used to make the braided knots, which, with the help of 12 students, took two weeks to complete.

“Comparte Roberto Saviano en Gomorra -ese libro que refleja la cruel realidad de la Camorra y que tiene su secuela en el cine- , una lúcida reflexión sobre el poder del cemento y su conexión con la banca. Habla de Italia, pero la historia nos suena cercana, ¿no? El cemento. Petróleo del sur. Todo nace del cemento. No existe imperio económico nacido en el sur de Italia que no pase por la construcción: licitaciones, contratas, obras, cemento, grava, mortero, ladrillos, andamios, obreros… Este es el instrumental del empresario italiano. El empresario italiano que no tenga la base de su imperio en el cemento no tiene esperanza alguna. Es el oficio más simple para ganar dinero en el más breve tiempo posible, adquirir solvencia, contratar personas en el momento propicio para unas elecciones, distribuir salarios, acaparar financieramente, multiplicar el propio rostro en las fachadas de los edificios que se construyen. El talento del constructor es el del intermediario y el del rapaz. Primero posee la paciencia del inquebrantable recopilador de documentos burocráticos, de esperas interminables, de autorizaciones sedimentadas como lentas gotas de estalactitas. Y luego el talento del rapaz, capaz de planear sobre terrenos insospechables, sustraerlos por poco dinero y después reservarlos hasta que cada centímetro y cada hoyo se hagan revendibles a precios exorbitantes. El empresario rapaz sabe muy bien cómo usar el pico y las garras. Los bancos italianos saben dar a os constructores el máximo crédito; digamos que los bancos italianos parecen edificados por los constructores. Y cuando no tenga crédito y las casas que va a construir no basten como garantía, siempre habrá algún buen amigo que le avale. La concreción del cemento y de los ladrillos es la única materialidad que verdaderamente conocen los bancos italianos. Investigación, laboratorio, agricultura, artesanía, los directores de banca los conciben como territorios difusos, lugares sin presencia de gravedad siquiera. Nosotros pensamos que los Silos podrían ser un espacio para la acción ciudadana que albergara actividades culturales y sociales de vecinos y asociaciones diversas. Creemos además que podrían reconstruirse colaborativamente con la gente que quisiera participar, para que no se conviertan en otro centro cultural politizado y alejado de la sociedad. Comenzamos el Sábado 13 de noviembre, RECONSTRUYENDA LA CASA POR EL TEJADO, y demostrando lo que somos capaces de hacer y lo bien que lo pasamos haciéndolo. En SOLUCIONES ESPECIALES he encontrado esta descripción de un sistema para hacer hormigón perforado.. el resultado es precioso!

El proceso para la construcción de muros de hormigón perforado consiste en: definir el diseño de las perforaciones, en este caso los patrones se han dibujado partiendo de dos algoritmos que permiten controlar la posición, el tamaño, el ángulo de desviación y la posición relativa entre círculos. Una vez establecido el patrón deseado se recortan los huecos sobre las tablas de encofrado, que posteriormente se montan en paralelo dejando la separación del grueso del muro, y manualmente se disponen los tubos los huecos, completada esta fase se vierte el hormigón tipo autocompactante y armado con fibras de acero de 10mm x 0.1mm In this project we investigated the architectural potential of perforations in a 1:1 building element. After several design studies and the manufacture of prototypes from polystyrene panels, two walls were realised in concrete. The individual holes could be controlled in terms of four parameters: their position, the angle of their deflection from the surface, their rotation about their centre, and their size. Their distribution on the wall could be designed through globally acting forces of attraction and repulsion; a dynamic system oriented the holes against one another until a state was reached in which there was no overlap. The deflection from the surface and the size of the holes, on the other hand, were controlled via the colour values of a digital image file. These algorithmic tools offered the students an intuitive route into design, and were used to complement the programming of their own logics of distribution and orientation. (via Hormigón perforado. paramétrico!!!….The external parametric wall of the warehouse encloses the building on three sides. Parametric processes have been used here to superimpose the contours and definition of silk undulating in the wind - a sign of its past. The wall consists of bricks, angled in particular ways to create the delicate texture of the wall (via el conTEXTO | Archi-Union Architects converts old fabric warehouse into new office & exhibition space)
